Design Team Appointed for Kangaroo Point Bridge

Design Team Appointed for Kangaroo Point Bridge

The consortium selected to build Brisbane's Kangaroo Point bridge includes Brisbane architecture company Blight Rayner and landscape architecture firm Aspect Studios.

Adrian Schrinner, the city's mayor, confirmed the Connect Brisbane consortium's selection this week and unveiled fresh renderings of the bridge, which will contain an overwater bar and restaurant.

The new bridge will span the Brisbane River from the intersection of Alice and Edward streets in the CBD to Scott Street at Kangaroo Point, and will cost $190 million. It will have a single-mast cable-stayed structure that will blend in with the cityscape while minimizing visual effect.

Adrian Schrinner, the city's mayor, announced the Connect Brisbane consortium's selection this week and presented new renderings of the bridge, which will contain an overwater bar and restaurant.

“This will be one of the only bridges in the world with the option of having a restaurant or boutique bar right on the bridge,” he said. “This will be a one-of-a-kind experience in Brisbane, and it will be a fantastic tourist magnet for our city.”

Construction work is planned to begin at the end of 2021, after detailed drawings have been created over a five-month period. Connect Brisbane is led by BESIX Watpac and includes Rizzani de Eccher, WSP, Dissing and Weitling, RWDI, F-POV, Right Angle Studios, and Rowland, in addition to Blight Rayner and Aspect Studios.

Cox Architecture and Arup collaborated on the bridge's concept design.

According to the ABC, Greens councillor Jonathan Sri raised issue over the restaurant's privatization of public space, saying that he "would rather see a picnic area with some public barbecues and picnic facilities on the bridge."

The Kangaroo Point bridge is one of several car-free "green bridges" proposed by Brisbane City Council across the river. Construction on the $60 million Breakfast Creek green bridge is slated to start by the end of the year, and two proposed West End bridges are expected to start in 2022.
