ARENA Backs Australia’s Inaugural Community-Driven Electrification Experiment

ARENA Backs Australia’s Inaugural Community-Driven Electrification Experiment

An innovative initiative unveiled today by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), alongside collaborators Brighte, Rewiring Australia, and Endeavour Energy, will electrify 500 households within the 2515 postcode region in New South Wales.

With a funding injection of $5.4 million from ARENA, the "Electrify 2515 Community Pilot" will facilitate the transition of 500 residences in the north Illawarra 2515 area to electrified systems, offering valuable insights into the potential advantages of an electrified future for Australia.

Darren Miller, CEO of ARENA, emphasised that this endeavour would not only shed light on the impact of household electrification on grid stability but also on diminishing energy expenses for consumers.
“Flexible demand at a residential level is expected to be critical as homes electrify. By undertaking electrification in a managed way, we can reduce the need to upgrade our electricity network and reduce costs for all electricity consumers.”
The primary aim of this pilot project is to expedite the transition to energy-efficient systems in households, scrutinising the effects on consumers and the grid. This will involve the installation of energy-efficient electric appliances and other consumer energy resources (CER), such as heat pump space and water heaters, home batteries, and rooftop solar panels, managed by a home energy management system (HEMS).
By closely monitoring the installation progression, the pilot initiative intends to glean insights into consumer behaviour and decision-making regarding the acquisition and utilisation of CER, facilitating a deeper comprehension of how to expand and commercialise home electrification.
Katherine McConnell, Founder and CEO of Brighte, expressed that the pilot project seeks to actualise an electric-powered tomorrow within a tangible community setting. “This project will allow us to learn locally so we can scale nationally, generating critical insights for consumers, tradespeople, industry and policymakers on how to rapidly and effectively scale electrification across Australia.
